Small Steps Towards Sacred Rhythms
Small Steps Towards Sacred Rhythms
Have you ever wondered what is the difference between daily routines and sacred rhythms? Well, let’s take a few minutes and explore this topic together. The best way for me to explain it is to share with you my personal daily routines vs my sacred rhythms. Here is my morning daily routine. Up by 6:30, 20-minute workout, time in the Word or a great book, time with the Father, make my breakfast shake, shower, off to work and in my workspace by 8:45. I’ve learned that daily routines are imperative for my spiritual and mental wellbeing AND they are for you as well. I’ll share the importance of routine in another blog post. However, my daily routines are different from sacred rhythms, and here’s how.
First, Sabbath rest is a sacred rhythm. I’ve had to fight for sabbath rest. I know that sounds like a paradox to fight for rest, but it’s been my reality. I’ve had to be intentional about setting up boundaries around my day of rest otherwise, work and other distractions can easily slip into my day. So, what does rest look like? Being aware of His presence which for me is usually outside under my oak trees in my backyard. Slowing down my pace and doing something I enjoy like boating, reading, taking walks, thrifting, being with my loved ones. I disconnect from anything related to work. NOW, this is easy for me to do because I don’t have little ones. When my children were young, our day of rest looked something like this…church in the morning, out for lunch, naps, and then dinner and prep for Monday.
Second, prayer is a sacred rhythm. I have a friend that sets the timer on her phone multiple times throughout her day, she is reminded to stop and pray. It’s beautiful! I’m not able to do that because my work schedule is varied, but I do start each day with prayer and then I’m mindful of God’s presence throughout the day. And, yet again, this has taken practice for me. As I’ve grown in my love for Jesus, my desire to speak with Him has increased…and…the longer I walk with Him, my confidence in Him to care for me has grown and I gladly surrender my day into His hands.
Third, and the final one we’re going to focus on for this blog - there are several more - is worship. There are several ways to worship. Singing, dancing, praying, poetry, art, and so on. But what is absolutely beautiful is that our lives can be an act of worship. What does that mean? Every time I care for another, when I put someone else’s needs above my own, it is an act of worship. Every time I give tithes and offerings, whether time, money or both, it is an act of worship.
Sacred rhythms draw me closer to the Father. Our hope at Blue Stone Coaching is that you will draw closer to Him as well. Please connect with us at www.yourbluestone.com.
