Serving Your Weakness or Your Purpose: A Journey of Spiritual Growth

Often in life, we are faced with choices that define who we are and where we are heading.  Among these choices is the decision to either serve our weaknesses or serve our purpose. You and I are faced with this choice every day. We can focus on our weaknesses and they define us OR we can focus on the One who has called us, equipped us, and placed purpose in our hearts.

This profound statement encapsulates a fundamental truth about human existence: we are endowed with the capacity to either succumb to our shortcomings or rise above them to fulfill our divine calling. Drawing inspiration from scripture, let us explore the significance of this choice and the transformative power it holds in our lives.

The Bible offers numerous insights into serving one's weakness or purpose. In 2 Corinthians 12:9, the apostle Paul writes, "But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” This verse highlights the paradoxical nature of weakness and strength.

When we acknowledge our weaknesses and surrender them to the divine, we open ourselves to the transformative power of God's grace. Instead of allowing our weaknesses to hinder us, we can leverage them as opportunities for God's strength to be made manifest in our lives.

The book of Philippians reminds us of the importance of aligning our actions with our purpose. Philippians 3:14 states, "I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." This verse emphasizes the need for perseverance and focus as we follow the ways of Jesus.  By pressing on toward our spiritual calling, we resist the temptation to serve our weaknesses and instead, keep our eyes locked on Jesus.

In the story of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32), we encounter a powerful illustration of the consequences of serving one's weaknesses versus embracing one's purpose. The younger son squanders his inheritance on reckless living, serving his desires and indulging in worldly pleasures. Upon realizing the emptiness of his ways, he humbles himself and returns to his father, seeking forgiveness and restoration. In contrast, the older son, consumed by jealousy and self-righteousness, fails to grasp the depth of his father's love and mercy. His inability to forgive and extend grace reflects a mindset rooted in serving his ego rather than embracing love and reconciliation.

Similarly, in the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11), we witness how Jesus resists the allure of serving his weaknesses and remains steadfast in his purpose. Despite being tempted by the devil with offers of power, fame, and worldly authority, Jesus remains unwavering in his commitment to God's will. He declares, "Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him" (Matthew 4:10), reaffirming his allegiance to His purpose.

The choice between serving our weaknesses or our purpose is not a one-time decision but a continuous journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth. It requires introspection, discernment, and reliance on the guidance of the Holy Spirit. As we navigate this journey, it is essential to cultivate a mindset of humility, surrender, and obedience to God's will.

One of the greatest examples of serving one's purpose is found in the life of Jesus Christ Himself. In John 6:38, Jesus declares, "For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me." Jesus demonstrated unwavering obedience to his Father's purpose, even in the face of suffering and persecution. His life serves as a model to emulate as we strive to align our will with God's will and fulfill our divine purpose.

In Ephesians 2:10, we are reminded that "we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." This verse underscores the inherent value and purpose that God has put in each of us. We are not merely products of chance or circumstance but masterpieces crafted by the hands of a loving Creator. By embracing our identity as children of God and embracing the good works He has prepared for us, we can live lives of significance and impact.

Ultimately, the choice to serve our weaknesses or our purpose is a reflection of our faith and trust in God's plan for our lives. It requires courage to confront our vulnerabilities and surrender them to the transformative power of God's grace. It demands perseverance to press on toward our spiritual calling, even in the face of adversity. And it necessitates humility to acknowledge that we are vessels through which God's purpose is fulfilled, not masters of our destiny.

As we embark on this journey of serving our purpose, let us draw strength from the words of Isaiah 41:10, "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." With God as our guide and sustainer, we can overcome our weaknesses, fulfill our purpose, and live lives that bring glory to His name. May we choose wisely and serve faithfully, knowing that in Him, we find our truest identity and deepest fulfillment.

With Love and Encouragement,

Julia
